Walnut Grove

Finally, a ride! After days of wall-to-wall rain, I woke up to the unfamiliar sound of silence and bright yellow sunlight. Failing to get Don out of bed–he did say he had a very nice sleep–I hopped astride Beastie and headed off into the Delta. The route I took was all country lanes and overhanging trees, picturesque and soothing.

I picked up a cop at one of the freeway intersections, but I’m seldom in a hurry and rode politely. He gave up waiting for me to speed and vanished some time before the road went from straight lines cutting through farmland to interesting swoops over levees and the occasional bridge. Before long I was pulling up at Walnut Grove where I spent a happy hour hunting for historical markers and landmarks. I’ll write about that at Raven’s Roads.

Using the last few seconds of my cellphone’s battery (oops!) to call Don who was now (obviously) awake, he said he’d come and join me and so I sat in a local cafe and read their newspaper and drank their coffee. I had just settled down on the steps overlooking the river when I heard the unmistakable roar of his engine and waved. There’s something just a little adventurous and fun about meeting one’s spouse in a different location and we enjoyed the ride back together. I wasn’t done though–I wanted pizza, so we headed downtown.

We decided that Papa Murphy’s was too pricey so got yummies from the supermarket and stocked up on missing items from the pantry. Two for the price of one.

We’d hardly been home an hour before the rain started falling yet again. The seat of my jeans was damp from the soaked-in water of the last storm system (my bike seat is absorbent, apparently), and I gather that it won’t stop raining now for the next several days. Sometimes, it’s good to dance between the raindrops.
