One or t’other, but not both, please
Filed in BlogToday, feeling stir-crazy, Don and I headed downtown on one of our “excuse” missions: Find an excuse to go riding, then excuse yourself. (This time it was cat litter.) It has been raining steadily for a couple of days, and we were getting that whole “stuck indoors” feeling.
It rained but a little, and the sun came out to illuminate great big more-rain-later clouds. There’s one thing I’ve learned recently about myself and rain:
I can deal with riding in the rain.
I can deal with riding at night.
I cannot deal, very well, with riding in the rain at night.
It’s the glasses, you see. First, my visor gets full of droplets. The first swipe with my glove smears them, so that all I can see is a bunch of yellow (street) and white (car, juggernaut) lights ahead. Then, I lift my visor just a little and that helps, but within moments the spray and dreck from the rain have covered those in water, too.
Now, I’m hosed, because I can’t even tell where the median is. My vision consists of a bunch of starbursts of light that would be pretty at any other velocity and in any other circumstance. The only way I can see anything is to peer over the top of my glasses, at which point my usual nearsightedness kicks in (luckily, it’s not bad).
Blech. Just, blech.
I’d be interested to know what you use to deal with riding in the rain at night, other than the obvious one of “Don’t, because is sucks.”

I use Nikwax “Visor Proof” on my visor. It’s awesome for riding in the rain, night or day — the rain beads up on the visor and a quick turn of the head clears the visor off instantly. No need to swipe with your finger at all.
Obviously it wouldn’t help with the glasses issue but maybe it could help with the other annoyances.

Ooh, I’ll have to try that. Is it different from Zooke, which doesn’t seem to work for the rain?
If I can keep my visor shut, the glasses issue (usually steaming) would be helped with Zooke.

Yeah, the Visor Proof is for rain, not fog. The idea is the same, though — you spray the V P on your visor, buff it in with a rag, and you’re good to go.
I have to apply it pretty regularly (once in the morning and once at lunch if I’m on an all-day rainy ride, otherwise maybe twice a week for rainy/winter commuting) but it’s not that expensive and only needs 2 sprays to cover the visor.
