Fixing the mirror
Filed in Motorcycle MaintenanceThere are three parts to my former mirror. One part is the stalk, one part is the mirror, and the third is the thingy that holds the two together. The bolt connecting them all was what sheared off, leaving a stalk with a solid piece of metal where there should be a hole for a bolt.
Don tried a variety of methods to remedy this. He used power tools and drill bits. He used a screw as a nail and hammered it (this also helped to guide the eventual power drill bit). The first screw pinged off into the sunset. This is traditional for motorcycle repairs.
Eventually there was a hole. Good.
Then he attempted to prise the mirror away from its rubber casing, which I think was supposed to allow these disparate parts all to mate again. Unfortunately, at that stage, the entire mirror, which had previously survived a 20 mph crash, cracked.
Since Suzuki Intruder mirrors cost around $60, we stole the mirror from Arnie, my non-working Virago.
I now have mismatched mirrors: one short and rounded, the other long and square. That’s traditional, too.
