A night ride
Filed in BlogLast night we went out to call somebody about a modem. (It had been advertised as fully working, and turned out to be broken…go figure.) I decided to ride on back with Don: My night vision leaves something to be desired these days, and I was already tired out from riding to Weaverville and back then going on a fun ride to the local fishery with Don.
Wow, but it’s dark out here! Most places I’ve been it takes a while to see the Milky Way, to let the eyes adjust; here, all I have to do is lean back and look. The deer were out in droves, too–we have little black-tailed deer, quite a lot of youngsters, which behave accordingly. When faced with a big, loud motorcycle they don’t know which way to go and we missed one of them by less than a foot.
I love being out here in the wilderness. I love being able to spot a hawk as I go by, or have a horse race along with me on the other side of its fence, and to see which trees are deciduous by the golden hue of their falling leaves. I also know that riding will get challenging from here on; not only are said leaves falling, but snow and ice will come–highway 299 to Weaverville is equipped with “chains required” signs.
I am quite sure that my riding will be curtailed this winter, but for now, I’m enjoying every minute, even if it means freezing my buns off after sunset to make a simple phone call.
